Geoconsult is a privately owned New Zealand engineering consultancy established in 2009, specialising in the fields of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology.

Geoconsult provides affordable geotechnical services with quick turnarounds, primarily to the New Zealand market, with a focus on delivering practical, cost efficient solutions to our clients. Our client base includes local government, developers, contractors, private individuals and other consultants.

With over 10 staff members between our offices in Auckland, Christchurch, Tauranga, Hamilton and Whangarei our team of professional Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists have a wide range of experience and expertise within both the geotechnical and geological professions. The Geoconsult team includes Chartered Professional Engineers (CPEng) with current registered memberships of IPENZ (The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand), the Geological Society of London (GSL), the New Zealand Geotechnical Society (NZGS), The International Society for Soil Mechanics & Foundation Engineering and the International Society of Rock Mechanics.

Our Christchurch office was set up in 2012 following the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence between September 2010 and June 2011 with the aim of providing geotechnical services for the Christchurch rebuild. Geoconsult is committed to being involved with the immediate rebuild and long term growth of Christchurch and the Canterbury Region. Since opening our Christchurch office we have undertaken hundreds of geotechnical investigations across the Canterbury region in all technical categories, becoming familiar with both the unique geotechnical and geological aspects of the region and specific geotechnical requirements of the Selwyn, Christchurch, Lincoln and Waimakariri Councils.

Our Christchurch office works closely with Ground Investigation Ltd, who use drill rigs fitted with dynamic probes and the latest CPT and SDMT testing equipment, so that we can provide both fieldwork and consulting services to optimise time and costs in delivering geotechnical reports.

It is often a requirement of the local council that a Geotechnical Report or Soil Report be provided for a building development as part of the Building Consent process.

If you are considering selling or purchasing a property, it is prudent to have the property checked for possible problems with building foundations or ground instability.

Geoconsult - geotechnical earthworks monitoring

Earthworks are the process of moving soil from one area to another. This may appear to be a simple process, but is actually an engineering activity that requires skilful operation.

Retaining walls are structures that support a vertical face of earth, usually a cut or fill face.

Movements of the ground can often result in displacement of house foundations. This can cause damage or cracking to the house. There are five main causes of foundation movement:

Liquefaction is a phenomenon in which the strength and stiffness of a soil is reduced by earthquake shaking or other rapid loading. It occurs in saturated soils, which are subjected to shaking.

If you have had a slip on your property or you are concerned about the stability of your property, you will need a geotechnical engineer to assess the site.

It is usually a council requirement that excavations for foundations are inspected by a geotechnical engineer during construction and prior to pouring the foundations.

On site disposal of stormwater or wastewater often requires design of stormwater detention tanks or septic tanks and effluent treatment plants.

  • “The Team at Geoconsult have provided me, albeit a small job in comparison to others, an overall very high standard of work ethics. Your website was great & informative, the follow up enquiry accurate & prompt with quotes & timeframe. The onsite team brilliant & well mannered, reception general enquiries and accounts have all been prompt and helpful when any question arose. I used to be a company accountant, so I know how hard to find and how valuable a good team can be.

So thanks again for everything and well done, for making this part of my subdivision invisible to me, yet well presented.”

  • “A quick note to let you know how much we appreciate the professionalism and speed of your response to the questions from Council about our plans. When our Architect recommended you to us, he talked about the quality of your work. He was right. This is a somewhat nerve-wracking process for us. Know how much your work is appreciated.”
